How to Stop People From Seeing Your Followers on Instagram (2026)
Go private: Instagram has no setting to hide your follower list, but a private account hides it from non-followers. Steps, plus remove, block and restrict.
Key takeaways
- Instagram has no setting to hide your follower list on a public account.
- Making your account private hides your Followers and Following lists from non-followers only.
- Remove, block or restrict individual followers; none of these sends a notification.
- Follower counts and the mutual followers line can't be hidden.
- Business and creator accounts must switch to personal before they can go private.
- Bought followers appear in your public list, and refills are void if the account goes private.
You can't hide your follower list on a public Instagram account, because there is no setting for it. The only built-in way to stop people from seeing your followers is to switch to a private account, which hides your Followers and Following lists from anyone you haven't approved. To keep specific people out, remove them as followers or block them.
Can you hide your followers on Instagram?
Only partly. Instagram shows your follower count to everyone. On a public account, anyone with the app can tap that number and scroll the full list.
A private account limits the lists to people who already follow you. Your approved followers can still see who else follows you and who you follow.
That means hiding your followers comes down to three tools:
- Go private to hide your Followers and Following lists from strangers.
- Remove or block to keep particular people out of your lists and off your profile.
- Turn off account suggestions so your profile is recommended less often next to other accounts.
Some things you cannot do as of October 2026:
- Hide your follower or following count.
- Hide your Following list on a public account.
- Choose which approved followers can see your lists.
If an app or website claims to do any of these, treat it as a scam, especially if it asks for your Instagram password.
How do you make your Instagram account private?
Open your profile, tap the three-line menu, choose Account privacy and turn on Private account. The change takes effect at once and you can switch back at any time. Instagram's Help Center lists the same steps for the app and the web.
Step by step on iPhone and Android
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
- Tap the three-line menu at the top right.
- Scroll to Who can see your content and tap Account privacy.
- Turn on Private account and confirm.
On a desktop browser, click More, then Settings, then Account privacy. Teen accounts are set to private by default, so many younger users are already covered.
What if you have a business or creator account?
Professional accounts cannot be private. You first need to open Settings, tap Account type and tools, then Switch to personal account.
While the account is personal, you lose Insights, contact buttons, the professional dashboard and most monetisation tools. For a brand or a working creator, that is a real cost, so think about it before you switch.
What a private account hides and what it doesn't
| Item | Public account | Private account (seen by non-followers) |
|---|---|---|
| Follower and following counts | Visible | Visible |
| Followers list | Visible | Hidden |
| Following list | Visible | Hidden |
| Posts, reels and stories | Visible | Hidden |
| Profile photo, name and bio | Visible | Visible |
| Mutual follower names under the bio | Visible to logged-in users | Visible to logged-in users |
Existing followers stay when you go private. If someone you don't want seeing your list already follows you, going private alone won't remove them; you also need the steps in the next section.
After the switch, new followers have to send a request. You'll find pending requests at the top of your Activity (heart icon) feed, where you can approve or delete each one.
How do you remove, block or restrict a follower?
Remove someone if you just want them off your list, block them if you want them off your profile entirely, and restrict them if you want to limit their comments and messages without them noticing. Instagram doesn't send a notification for any of the three.
Remove a follower
- Go to your profile and tap Followers.
- Find the person, using the search bar if the list is long.
- Tap Remove next to their name and confirm.
On a public account they can follow you again straight away. On a private account they'd have to send a new request, which you can ignore.
Block a follower
Open their profile, tap the three dots at the top right, then Block. Instagram also offers to block new accounts the person may create, which helps if someone keeps coming back.
Blocked users can't find your profile, posts, stories or lists from that account. They aren't told, but they may notice your profile has gone missing for them.
Restrict a follower
Restrict sits in the same three-dot menu. Their new comments on your posts are visible only to them unless you approve them, and their messages go to message requests.
Restricted people can still see your profile and your follower list. Restrict protects your comment section, not the privacy of your lists.
| Option | Do they stay a follower? | Can they see your Followers list? | Are they notified? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remove | No | Yes on a public account, no on a private one | No |
| Block | No | No | No |
| Restrict | Yes | Yes | No |
| Go private | Existing followers stay | Only approved followers can | No |
The most private setup combines two steps: go private, then remove anyone already on your list who shouldn't be there. If you manage accounts on other networks, our guide on how to remove followers on X covers the equivalent steps there.
Can you hide your follower count or the mutual followers line?
No. Your follower and following counts appear on your profile for everyone, public or private, and Instagram offers no toggle to hide them. You can only hide like and view counts on posts.
To hide like counts on posts you see, open Settings, tap Like and share counts and turn on Hide like and share counts. To hide counts on your own post, turn on the option under Advanced settings before you share, or tap the three dots on a published post and choose Hide like count.
The line under your bio that names mutual followers to logged-in visitors also can't be switched off. A few related settings can reduce how visible you are:
- Account suggestions: in Edit profile, turn off Show account suggestions on profiles so Instagram is less likely to recommend your account on other people's profiles.
- Close Friends: share stories with a shorter list instead of all followers.
- Hide story and live: under Settings, hide your stories and live videos from chosen people without removing them.
- Activity status: turn it off under Messages and story replies so people can't see when you were last active.
